How this 13-year-old skateboarder became a youngest X Games bullion medalist in history

(ENCINITAS, Calif.) — They contend never accommodate your heroes.
At 13 years old, Brighton Zeuner kick them.
Just one day after her birthday, Brighton took home bullion during a women’s skateboard park eventuality during a 2017 X Games in Minneapolis. She kick out her associate competitors and became a youngest X Games medalist in a competition’s history.
“There’s small kids saying, ‘Oh, we saw we on YouTube.’ It’s kind of crazy for me,” Brighton told ABC News’ “Nightline.” “I don’t know. I’m 13, and it’s kind of weird.”
Brighton’s list of firsts is long. When she was 11 years old, she became a youngest X Games aspirant ever. And in 2015, she became a youngest leader during a Vans U.S. Open.
Brighton is also a usually womanlike leader of California State Games Athlete of a Year.
At home in Encinitas, California, Brighton appears like many 13-year-old girls, gripping makeup and diaries in her bedroom. But in her backyard stands a half-pipe for Brighton to use her moves.
Brighton says she skates in her backyard each day. Local skaters have used a half-pipe, as good as legends like Tony Hawk.
“She got to accommodate and movement with a best,” Brighton’s mother, Bridget Zeuner, told “Nightline.”
Brighton’s comparison brother, Jack Zeuner, is a reason she got into a sport. When Jack became meddlesome in skateboarding, she was dragged along to a park, too. It didn’t take prolonged before she was violence him in competitions.
“She’s kind of a natural. we wasn’t,” Jack told “Nightline.” “I didn’t unequivocally care.”
“He’s improved than me during some things in transport stuff. we kind of possess a whole competition thing,” Brighton said.
These days, Jack has also turn a cameraperson for his sister.
Brighton skates for hours each day. She pronounced she loves a competition since of “the leisure we get, and, we know it sounds cheesy, though escape.”
She now travels a universe with her skateboard and will shortly conduct to Shanghai, China, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
“It’s cold removing all those stamps on my passport. It’s going to fill adult during a finish of a year,” pronounced Brighton.
“We go with her. Keeps them grounded, keeps them out of trouble,” pronounced Bridget Zeuner.
“As a family, we’re really tighten since of that,” Brighton’s father, Brandon Zeuner, told “Nightline.” “The propagandize they attend now is really open to a report that allows kids to transport a universe or usually not be benefaction all a time in school.”
In an impassioned competition historically dominated by grown boys and men, Brighton is blazing a trail. She is a initial womanlike skateboarder ever sponsored by Red Bull.
“There’s stereotypes that usually boys can do it, and it’s a virile sport. Honestly, a girls have proven that we can share a sport,” Brighton said.
She hopes to make it to a 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, where skateboarding will make the entrance as an Olympic sport.
“Fingers crossed. That’s going to pull skateboarding,” Brighton said.
She added, “I usually wish to make a vital off skateboarding and see where it takes me.”
